Charlotte DeVillier’26 is a four-year Senior from Agawam, Massachusetts, and co-captain and starting goalie of Varsity Field Hockey. She has played on the team for four years and has been recruited by Stevenson University, where she also plans to study pre- med.
Head Coach Kait Perrelle ’06 said, “Charlotte is a lights-out goalie. Her reaction time, field awareness, and skill on saves is phenomenal. In addition, she is a leader of our defense, using her vision and voice to navigate it.”
How did you get involved with field hockey?
I started field hockey in first grade. At the time, I already played lacrosse, but all of my friends from the lacrosse team went over to field hockey, so I went with them. My mom ended up coaching me during my second year, so that’s how I got into being a goalie. All the other girls would cry, so she put me in goal.
What has your experience been like playing field hockey here?
I really love the team and the environment. [Coach] KP pushes us, and it’s a good balance between having fun and working really hard.
What are some of your favorite memories from your career here?
Taft Day last year is one. We won in overtime, and it was a really good game.
Any big game we have is also a good memory. We have a fun tradition before we play Greenwich Academy called DIEGA which stands for “Die GA.”
What is your favorite thing about playing field hockey?
I love team sports, because you get to meet so many people and you become one big family. We have so many traditions on our team, and I think the fall is my favorite part of the year, because of the people on the team.
What are your goals for your Senior year?
I hope that we can make it to New England’s. We made it to the quarterfinals last year, so hopefully we can go all the way this year.
What was your college recruitment process like?
It started in eighth grade. I went to a tournament during Thanksgiving and Stevenson University found me. I blew them off a bit, because
I didn’t know what Stevenson was, and I wanted to go D1.
Prep year was quiet; I went to a bunch of showcases, and then Lower Mid year I started reaching out to a bunch of colleges. I was talking to some low-level D1s and some NESCACs, and then Stevenson came back up, and I ended up going to visit the campus. I fell in love with the school and the coach. It also fit well with what I wanted to study, which is pre-med.
What are your goals for playing in college?
My goal is just to make the most of it. It’s my last four years; I won’t play after college, so I want to practice as hard as I can, whenever I can, and play as much as I can.
What advice would you give younger players?
Embrace everything. Even when you are sprinting and doing conditioning, take it as a learning moment and make it fun. Don’t let little things get you down. Build up your confidence and don’t base it on what other people think of you.
