This summer, ninety-five Bearcats engaged in service, research, and exploration trips across the globe. Ms. Kinyette Henderson, dean of student life, and Ms. Beth Smithey, instructor in chemistry, led a new program in Tanzania. Students volunteered at The Girls Foundation in Arusha, a non-profit co-founded by Beth Rockefeller ’78, and went on a five-day safari to national parks.
A new program in Spain, run by Dr. Jason Larson, director of religious and spiritual life, and Ms. Carmen Dockery, instructor in Spanish, allowed students to explore Madrid, Toledo, Cordoba, Seville, Granada, and Málaga and study medieval Spain, when Jews, Muslims, and Christians lived side-by-side. Luca Webb Reyes ’28 said, “I enjoyed the trip, because I was given the chance to learn how religion influences culture in Spain.”
In addition to the Hersey and MacLeish programs, this summer marked the debut of the Euclid Scholars, a math program at Cornell. Students engaged in research, took math classes, and explored Ithaca, New York.
Mr. Dave Thompson, director of international programs, said, “These programs allow students to bring their learning back to the school. It is very important for our travel programs that they are all connected to our curriculum.”
