From May 2-4, Varsity Sailing competed in the NESSA Team Racing Championship, hosted in Boston by Harvard and MIT. The championship brought together eight of the region’s top high school sailing teams for a weekend of competition.
The event included teams from St. George’s School, Tabor Academy, Brunswick School, Greenwich High School, Greenwich Academy, Greens Farms Academy, Dartmouth School, and Hotchkiss. Hotchkiss finished third overall.
Co-captian Miranda Beitel ’25 said, “At the start of the season, we raced last year’s national champions in a preseason event, and it was eye-opening. It showed us where we wanted to be.”
The championship followed a team racing format. Three boats from each school raced against three from another. “Our toughest competitors are usually Tabor, Brunswick, and St. George’s,” said Beitel. “We did very well against Brunswick, which is always a highlight. They’re a team we get really competitive with.”
The team rotated through different lineups across multiple races. Beitel, Dhruv Kothari ’25, Fynn Olsen ’25, Samara Walshe ’25, Pierce Olsen ’25, Dasha Gracheva ’26, Thomas O’Grady ’26, and Carla Oudin ’26 all sailed.
Beitel said, “The team prepared for this race by being on the water two hours every day, practicing, and racing against each other. Our team has so much depth that our internal matchups are often as challenging as the races themselves. It was truly a team effort. It is hard to single anyone out because everyone contributed at such a high level.”
The Sailing team is currently preparing for the upcoming New Englands Fleet Racing.
New Englands is on May 24-25.
