Led by Head Coach Paul Oberto and Assistant Coach Will Boscow ’11, Boys Varsity Baseball starts its season with a 2-5 record, including two walk-off wins against Choate and Loomis.
Oliver Burger ’27 said, “We began the season with many close games, but we ended up losing by one or two runs. However, this season is still promising, because we don’t have any Seniors, so we will have almost the same team next year.”
BVB ended last season with a 4-14 record, concluding with a close loss to Trinity Pauling in the Founders League playoffs. Coach Boscow said, “We had a really exciting last week of the 2024 season with a walk-off win against Loomis. There was good energy and confidence, which you could feel throughout our group.”
During spring break, Varsity Baseball traveled to Vero Beach, Florida, to train at the Jackie Robinson Facility. They went 4-0 in preseason scrimmages. Coach Boscow said, “It is fun for our guys to be able to focus solely on the sport and not have to worry about anything else. We got to go to a Mets and Red Sox training game, and we saw a college game between Michigan and Illinois. We got to watch some fun baseball, but more importantly, play lots of baseball.”
Josh Zambrano ’27 said, “My favorite part of the season so far has definitely been our preseason trip. That’s when our team clicked. We had become one big brotherhood that has each other’s backs.”
This season, the team hopes to make it to the upper bracket of the Founders League during playoffs. They also aim to finish winning over half of their games. Zambrano said, “Our team follows the philosophy ‘change the narrative,’ which means to change what it means when you hear Hotchkiss Baseball.”
BVB has yet to elect captains, as it has no Seniors or PGs on the team. Coach Boscow says, “Our leaders lead. They don’t feel the need to have titles.”
Varsity Baseball has a game every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. Coach Boscow said, “Every game is a big game in our league. There isn’t a specific one that stands out as more important than the others. Our league is really good, and it is even too, so every day is an opportunity to go out and win.”
