On Tuesday, October 15, a bronze sculpture by local artist Joy Brown was installed south of the crosswalk on Route 41. “Sitter with Head in Hands” now looks out over the sun as it rises each morning.
Ms. Brown specializes in ceramics, works in bronze, and wall reliefs. “Sitter” is part of a series of large-scale bronze sculptures that have been featured on Broadway and in public spaces across the United States and in Shanghai, China.
Ms. Brown initially creates small versions of her sculptures in ceramic, then makes large versions in foam in her studio in Kent, CT. The full-scale bronzes are cast and assembled in Shanghai. She said, “My figures speak of that peaceful place within—calm, open, aware.”
A second sculpture will be installed on campus this winter in anticipation of a Tremaine Gallery show featuring Ms. Brown’s work as part of the the 50 years of women anniversary celebrations.
Community members crossing back and forth to the FFC each day are greeted by “Sitter.” Daniel Bao ’25 said, “The sculpture really adds a calming and warm presence to an empty spot on campus.”
