On Saturday, April 27, Varsity Sailing competed in a regatta at St. George’s Academy. The team faced off against four other schools and ended the day with three wins and one loss.
Hotchkiss will likely sail against the same schools in New Englands, since four of the five teams that competed in the regatta are currently ranked among the top ten in the New England Schools Sailing Association (NESSA).
At the regatta, Hotchkiss beat Greenwich Academy 3-0 and Barrington and Brunswick both 2-0, with a loss to St. George’s, 1-3.
The school’s sailing team is currently 15-3, with wins against some of the top high school sailing teams in New England. Co-captain Samara Walshe ’25 said, “I am happy with the team and our dynamic so far, even though we’ve had a couple of losses.”
The team’s first two losses of the season were against Tabor Academy, ranked 3rd in NESSA, and East Greenwich. Both races were decided in the litigation room, where onthe- water disputes between sailors were resolved.
St. George’s currently ranks number one in NESSA, with Hotchkiss at 2nd. Brunswick is ranked 5th, Barrington 7th, and Greenwich 11th.
Head Coach Richard Davis said, “For the rest of the season, our goal is to sail cleaner, faster, and smarter. If we have aspirations of getting to and winning Nationals, we’re going to have to level up our focus.”
