Varsity Rowing competed for the Mahoney Cup on April 28, when the boys’ first boat earned a historic first-place finish.
The Mahoney Cup Regatta is the home regatta of Glastonbury High School in Glastonbury, CT. The cup is held annually in honor of Eric Mahoney, who died in 2002. This year, Hotchkiss competed against Avon High School, Glastonbury, and Middletown High School.
The boys’ first boat finished four seconds ahead of Glastonbury and beat Avon by 16 seconds to emerge in first. This victory is the fi rst time a boys’ boat from the school has won a race in the history of the rowing program.
Coach Amanda McClure said, “The team was very excited about winning the boys’ event and quite proud of the strong finishes for the rest of the team.”
The boys’ second boat finished third, and the boys’ four-man boat came in fourth place. The girls’ first and second boats both finished in second place.
Wyatt Towner ’24 said, “We always go into race day knowing that any crew is capable of beating another. That’s why we make sure that we work hard and prepare properly every single day as teammates and individuals.”
“We want to make it to the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association (NEIRA) and do pretty well there,” Tiger Mutter ’26 said. “Last year we were the lowest seed there and got eliminated pretty quickly. This year, we’re hoping to do well in the preliminary races so that we start in a higher position at NEIRAS.”
The teams will compete at their next regatta on May 11, at the Kent Invitational.
