Super Bowl LVIII was a historic showdown between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs.
It was only the second Super Bowl ever to be decided in overtime, after Super Bowl LI in 2017, which saw the New England Patriots emerge victorious over the Atlanta Falcons.
The Chiefs, led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce, won the game despite being down early on.
Although the 49ers had a confident 10-3 lead going into the second half, the Chiefs quickly gained momentum and took the lead in the third quarter. By the end of the fourth quarter, the teams were tied at 19.
Heading into overtime, the 49ers won the coin toss. They chose to receive and get the first chance to score.
Super Bowl LVIII was the first Super Bowl to be played under the new overtime rules, which established in 2022 that both teams would get a chance to score before the game could end.
The Chiefs were able to hold the 49ers to a field goal. The Chiefs then marched down the field and scored a touchdown to give the team its third Super Bowl victory in five years.
Patrick Mahomes won Super Bowl MVP after throwing two touchdowns, including the game-winning touchdown pass to wide-receiver Mecole Hardman.
Students were able to watch the game in the Student Center and enjoy free food from the Snack Bar.
Mrs. Marcie Wistar, director of student activities, said, “It was great, because it allowed students to come in and get food while watching. I liked the event because students can come and mix and go, and have a good time together.”
