Mr. Souleman Toure ’19 returns to the school as the new Coordinator of Multicultural Recruitment and Retention in the Admission Office. A graduate of Bowdoin College, he looks forward to continuing to support student growth on campus. In his role, Mr. Toure will work to expand outreach to students who may not already know about boarding school. As an alum, Mr. Toure also hopes to bring back old staples of the school such as intermural rugby, and as a dorm affiliate in Redlich, he hopes to host at least one feed per month for the dorm.
What has been one of the highlights of your opening week?
Helping families learn more about Hotchkiss. We have an amazing campus, great faculty, and extraordinarily talented student body. This was true when I was a student here, and I feel the same now. I’ve had so many positive interactions with students in Redlich, during athletic practices, theater, and the community dinner this past Thursday.
What was it like for you to be a student here?
When I followed in my older cousin’s footsteps to attend the school, I expected something like a sleepaway camp, but I was wrong. My experience as a student was filled with opportunity. I had failures and successes, but they all led to my growth. I felt supported by my friends who I continue to be in touch with, and by some of the faculty who are still teaching today. They have all supported my transition back into the Lakeville community.
What do you do as Coordinator of Multicultural Recruitment and Retention?
In that role, I hope to bring Hotchkiss to families who might not have the resources to learn more about boarding school. I believe in the school’s initiative and commitment to building an intentionally diverse community, and it’s an integral part of my work on the road and in the Admissions Office.
What are you most excited for this year?
Everything! Theater and orchestra performances. Sitting in on classes. Playing golf is something I wish I did as a student. DEI and being a resource for students. I am excited about the opportunity to serve the community.
What are some of your goals for the year?
I would like to see every team on campus compete at least once, attend all theatrical productions, and host a feed once a month for my Redlichians as their dorm affiliate.
What changes, if any, do you hope to bring about this school year?
Re-introduce rugby to the community! I think we have many students who are interested, and I hope to build community around that activity.
