Thursday, May 18, 2023: Walking to Terrapin Cabin on my final head of school holiday, a lot of memories came back to me. While reading the journals of students from the past, their connection, love, admiration, and most importantly respect for their experiences here shone through those pages and hit me right in the heart.
As my friends trickled off to grab lunch, Hughlyn and I stayed to write our entries in the journals. I sat down on a log across from her with the journal and pen, and felt my four years flash before me.
Friday, August 30, 2019: “I am scared I will never find my place here,” I remember whispering to my dad as we sat down on the chairs outside Redlich. All he said was, “The right people will come into your life at the right time.” I believed him.
Thursday, May 18, 2023: As I prepared to leave this magical place, I felt tears trickling down my face. Hughlyn rose to hug me. That hug gave me a sense of joy, one that I had felt so many times here before because of the people in this community.
The joy of seeing my strong women in swim from the pool deck (thanks, Abby, for convincing me to join the team), from meeting Ben for the first time doing yoga at the lake (it’s a long story), attempting to ice skate with Isabella, surprising Hughlyn with a picnic, making a cake with Emily (I didn’t do any of the work), walking to BA with Audrey and Megan (for Bio obviously), staying up late cramming for math with Solbee, shower parties with Nicole (we are pretty decent at singing), seeing Darina laugh (at practically everything), ballet lessons with Gibson, New York adventures with Kiera, Nithya and Amelia, talking late into the night with Paige, Lauren, Anika, Taylor or Madeline (T3 family), CLUE-ing it out with Richie, walking around the Dining Hall for no reason with Maya, going on a walk around the lake with Annie, talking to Quisha after swim practice, to reading with Ella and learning lines with Chloé for a black box.
I could go on and on. These friendships and connections transformed me; they brought out the love, goodness, and kindness in me; they brought out the silly, funky and funny in me; they brought out the confidence, passion and drive in me… they brought out the me in Mehar.
And for those of you struggling to find your place here, just know, “The right people will come into your life at the right time.”
