The clash between Boys Varsity Lacrosse and Taft on a rainy Saturday night was one for the books. Led by Head Coach Andrew D’Ambrosio, the game was close the whole way, but the Bearcats ultimately lost the game 9-10.
The game was dedicated to raising awareness and funds for the One Love Foundation, which works to educate students on healthy relationships and end relationship abuse.
Despite leading for most of the game, the Bearcats lost their advantage in the third quarter. Co-captain and midfielder, Wylie Warchol ’23, who is committed to play Division I lacrosse at Colgate University next year, said, “We got off to a good start in the first half. The energy was good all throughout the game, but in the second half, we didn’t do little things right. And that’s what ended up killing us.”
At the time of the game, Taft’s lacrosse team was ranked 13th in the nation, according to the website Inside Lacrosse. Warchol said, “We are hoping to see Taft again, hopefully in the Founders League semi-final or championship play. The guys know that they’re gonna have to play with energy and grit for the rest of the year, and I’ve been reinforcing that idea.”
Liam Burke ’24, a midfielder, said, “We are always in competition with Taft, whether it be on the field, within the fan sections, or school spirit. We were looking to avenge last year’s loss.” Burke is committed to play Division I lacrosse at Johns Hopkins University next year.
Coach D’Ambrosio reflected on the game, saying, “I think we’re really happy with the results. I mean, obviously not happy to lose, but Taft is one of the best teams in the country. If we could have executed, particularly in between the restraining lines a little bit better, a few more ground balls, a little bit cleaner in our transition game, especially clearing, we probably would’ve won.”
When asked about the team’s goals, Coach D’Ambrosio said, “We want to be in the championship bracket [of the Founder’s League] when that time comes.” Burke agreed, saying, “I don’t think we want to land anywhere short of that.” After the team’s loss to Choate on Saturday the 13th, making the playoffs is unlikely.
