How is this season going so far for the team?
The season has been going well. We had an awesome preseason trip to Mesquite, Nevada. There was lots of fun team bonding and a lot of learning. We only have one loss so far, which was to an exceptionally strong team.
How is the team spirit so far?
Team spirit is great. We’re a really close group of girls, and we hype each other up every day, no matter what. I try to be funny and happy for the team even on my worst days, so my energy can become contagious. Being positive and leading by example always helps. A great example of our team spirit was in the second half of our Noble’s game when we were in a huge hole – we just scratched and clawed our way back. We never got down on each other, and we played great.
Do you have any tournaments or specific games that you’re looking forward to?
I’m looking forward to our game against Sacred Heart Greenwich. We lost to them by two last year, so I’m interested to see what happens this year. I think Loomis and Taft will both be good teams. We’ve beaten them before, but I think they’re pretty good competitors. We won the Founders League last year, and hopefully we can win it again this year.
What expectations do you have for the rest of the season?
I think we’re going to grow a lot closer over the rest of this season. We had 11 seniors last year, and those Seniors are all playing college lacrosse. We have a lot of new girls, with only 12 returners. But our returners are all athletes and leaders. They know what it takes to commit to a team and how to create an inclusive, positive culture.
So while it is a big new group of kids, they are being led and taught by a team who had a really successful season last year. So my expectations are to continue where we left off, and that’s exciting to see.
Do you have any advice for younger players?
Try your hardest and ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Our coach is very open about that. As a team, we often discuss the importance of asking questions and listening to others. We emphasize that every team member is equally valuable and important. Everyone’s really supportive and eager to help everyone else out, because we want the team to be the best that it can be.
What have been some of your favorite moments with the team?
We’ve had a lot of away games, so we haven’t done a lot of traditions. But I really enjoyed the pickleball tournament in Nevada. Everyone dressed up in different costumes, and it was a fun competition. We even got [Head Coach Anna] Traggio to play. One of my favorite things last year was when we had a water balloon fight right after a game, which I hope we can do again this year.
How has being a leader of the team changed you?
I think it’s going to hold me a lot more accountable as a player. It makes me want to be the best I can be for my team. It also makes me a lot more selfless. I always have to make sure that everyone else is okay.
