Players from the 1991 Boys Varsity Squash team, the last squash team at the school to win the NEPSAC championship, reunited on campus on Saturday, January 14 to commemorate their championship.

Last summer, by chance, a friend of former Head Coach Tim Katzman found one of the team’s 1991 jerseys at a flea market in Minnesota. Once Squash Program Director Bobby Burns ’08, recieved the jersey, he invited the team to campus.

The jersey is now framed and is displayed at Cullman Courts. Additionally, Coach Burns coordinated a special reunion dinner for the team with the Office of Alumni & Development in Monahan Hall.

“The reunion is important for our teams, because it helps them understand that their contribution to Hotchkiss squash will not soon be forgotten; and moreover, that their current endeavors are seen by a community larger than the one present at campus,” Coach Burns said.”

Coach Katzman and the players also watched the current teams play Loomis Chaffee. Boys Varsity Squash won all seven matches against Loomis, and Girls Junior Varsity beat Williston 6-1 and lost 2-5 against Millbrook.

Christian Waldron ’23, Boys Varsity Squash Captain, said, “Not only was the reunion meaningful to the former players and the team’s history, it also inspired me to become a successful squash player who will also be remembered in the future. It was also a great opportunity for me to reflect back on my squash career and how to improve more from here.”

Coach Burns said, “Overall, it was one of the more engaging atmospheres at the courts this season. I hope it inspired all our squash players to realize that squash is a life-long love affair.”
