Mo Nuhu ’23 is a four-year Senior from Ghana and member of the Boys Varsity Soccer team. Captain Thomas Navab ’24 said, “When I think of someone who perfectly embodies the image of a student-athlete, Mo comes first to my mind. He has been a role model for me since prep year, and I’ve enjoyed seeing him grow throughout our time together at Hotchkiss.”
What made you fall in love with soccer?
Growing up, soccer was the one sport that was available to me. My friends, my cousins, and my dad all grew up playing soccer. I had no choice but to play soccer, and eventually I fell in love. I love watching it, and I also love playing it.
What is your favorite part of Hotchkiss soccer?
Getting excited with the boys and the team and playing games are always exciting. You get to go on the field and do what you love.
What are your expectations for yourself and the team this season?
I want to score 30 goals this year in the league we play in. I scored 22 last year, and I want to top that this year. I would like the team to compete really well and maybe make the playoffs. If we win enough games, I think we can make it.
What is your most memorable moment in a Hotchkiss jersey?
Probably last year when we beat the New England champions: Northfield Mount Hermon. It was tied 2-2 late in the second half, and I scored the game-winning goal on a free kick. That was a very exciting moment because we went to their place, fought really hard, and we ended up beating them.
How have you developed as a person and as a soccer player at Hotchkiss?
My Prep year, it was all about me. I wanted to score; I didn’t really care how the team played. As my time went on, and I got to know the kids, I realized that soccer is always a team sport. You cannot do well by yourself. You need those around you to be as good as you and want to compete just as much as you. I’ve learned to coach and help my teammates to help the team win and also help me perform, because when my teammates perform, I am going to perform.
What would your advice be to young aspiring athletes?
Do what you love. I love soccer, and whenever I’m in school the thing on my mind is, “When is practice going to start? When is the next game?” When you find that thing you love, just do it. If that’s soccer for you, that’s awesome. If it’s tennis or basketball, or anything that you love doing, just make sure that you are having fun while doing that.
