After a year-long hiatus, the school’s Hotchkiss in the World travel programs are back, with trips to Italy, Germany, Guadeloupe, Spain and Israel.

These programs cover a wide variety of interests. Current programs include a Classics program in Italy, a Boys Varsity Basketball trip to Germany, a French cultural immersion trip to Guadeloupe, a trip to Spain where musically inclined students will learn and play music in the unique setting of Las Rozas de Madrid, and a trip to study the humanities and other social sciences in Israel. Students on the Italy classics trip, led by  Mr. David Conti, instructor in classics, will focus on Roman and Greek history. The program, which is scheduled to take place from June 20 to June 29, will bring students to  Rome to visit landmarks such as the Vatican Museum and St. Peter’s Basilica. After Rome, the students will travel south to Pompeii, hike into the crater of Mount Vesuvius, and spend a day in the ancient Greek city of Paestum. 

Current Latin student Will Levy ’24, who will be participating in the Italy travel program this summer,  said,“I am excited for the Hotchkiss in Italy program because it is a great experience that will deepen my understanding of Latin and give me a better view of the Roman world while also bonding with classmates and instructors.”

When asked about why he wanted to lead the trip to Italy, Mr. Conti explained that since Latin and Ancient Greek are “dead” languages, “This is the way for [Classics students] to get the most immediate experience.” 

This year, due to the COVID restrictions, faculty are modifying certain aspects. Mr. David Thomspon, director of international programs, said, “The guidance that [Hotchkiss] gets from the Center for Disease Control, as well as from local health authorities has been closely followed in order to try and create similar conditions [on the trips] to what [Hotchkiss] has been able to create on campus.”

The deadline to apply for all summer travel programs is February 9.
