The Varsity Ultimate Frisbee team currently sits near the top of the standings with a 10-2 record, but fell just short of defending its Connecticut State Championship on Saturday, May 11.
This year’s team is coached by veteran Head Coach David Thompson and new Assistant Coach Eric Stone. It has been an educational experience for both, as they share extensive experience coaching the sport. Stone coached the JV team last year and implemented the same tactics and game style that the Varsity program uses.
Varsity Ultimate Frisbee plays in various mini-tournaments that lead up to larger championships at the end of the year. Some impressive results thus far include going 1-1 against Middletown, which had been the toughest competition this year and in previous years. Co-captain Brian Wong ’19 said, “We’ve had a great season so far, with our only losses coming against Middletown, who we beat once, and Fairfield High School at the beginning of the year.”
Communication and teamwork are focal points for Varsity Ultimate this year. Coach Thompson emphasized the team’s cohesion and selflessness, saying, “They have a great attitude of working together to figure out the puzzle of being the best team they can be, as opposed to thinking about what they need to do to win or pad their individual stats.”

turners have been a key element to the team’s success. The team has also added players who were on JV last year, but worked on their game and have made the transition seamlessly onto Varsity. Highlights of the season thus far include Theresa Yu ’19 scoring over a defender who was some six inches taller than she is and the team rushing the field to congratulate Nico Petersik ‘21 on scoring back-to-back points.
The team is certainly not done, however, and has high hopes for its final few matches and competitions. The team didn’t play as well as it had hoped at the Connecticut State Championships, hosted on Taylor Field at Hotchkiss. Going in as the number one seed and staying undefeated throughout the round-robin, the team lost to fourth-seeded Xavier High School in the semi-finals, 6-9. It was edged out in the Bronze medal game 11-9, by Choate.
Its remaining schedule consists of the New England Championships, where it will have the chance to bounce back and finish the year with some hardware to show for its season.
To conclude the year, alumni of the program will return and join the team in celebrating “20 Years of Ultimate.” The event will also honor Head Coach Thompson, who founded the Ultimate Frisbee team and is co-founder and commissioner of the New England Prep School Ultimate League.
Ultimate hopes to build on its regular season and win its third New England Championship on Saturday, May 18th.
